A compendium on Race
PUBLICATION DESIGN
In 2014, as the Black Lives Matter movement was in its early days and Trayvon Martin’s killer had been acquitted, the moment felt crucial to address this pressing issue. The result was A Compendium on Race—a collection of essays, articles, quotes, and facts about race in America, compiled and designed in a broadsheet newspaper format with a one-time print run of 10,000 copies. Tragically, a decade later, racial inequalities continue to persist in our nation.
The decision to present the work in a newspaper format was intentional, offering readers an immersive experience on the topic. The scale and unconventional medium invite individual reflection or can be shared as a conversation piece to spark dialogue. This was one of the largest collaborative efforts I’ve been involved in with multiple designers, creative directors, program managers, researchers and writers.
The compendium has been honored with several awards for its design and impact:
/ Winner of the AIGA 2015 Cased competition
/ Silver prize in ADC's Editorial Design
/ The One Club Merit award for Public Service – Design / Publication Design
